《普通高中英语课程标准（2017年版）》为高中英语教学改革指明了方向：高中英语课堂教学的核心目标，就是落实立德树人的根本任务，积极发展学生的英语核心素养。据此，高中英语教师必须紧紧围绕这一目标，更新和优化英语教学形式，彰显英语的教育价值，因势利导，提升学生的英语核心素养，提高英语教学质量。
