    来自英国的近代生物化学家和科学技术史专家李约瑟,他对中国古代的科技发明给出高度评价:"在中国完成得发明和技术发现,改变了西方文明的发展进程,并因而也确定改变了整个世界的发展进程."但是,他也无不遗憾的说"为什么近代科学只在欧洲文明中发展,而未在中国文明中成长".这个疑问后来被称为"李约瑟难题".
